Marufuku Udon @ Jaya 1, Petaling Jaya

Udon-licious...

Whilst it may be new and slightly hidden, at the back of a passageway in Jaya 1 (sort of behind Fronterra/ under the PJLA),... Marufuku Udon has already been getting quite a lot of attention online:
(Especially since it is sort of a branch of the more established Sanuki Udon in Taman Desa)

Personally, I have never been to Sanuki, but I have been told that Marufuku is more geared to being a self service, fast food type eatery** where you line up and order at the counter, then take your noodles by yourself:
(Note: The servers are very friendly there though. If it's quiet they will be more than happy to serve you instead, as they did for us that night)

As for the menu, they have quite a variety of different udons (about 10 types?) as well as a few side dishes like grilled items (yakitori), desserts and beer/ booze to go along with your food.

First up, the yakitori we tried that night:
- Chicken (RM 3)
Japanese chicken satay....

- Ladies Fingers (RM 2) and Shitake (RM 2)
Some of the vegetable grilled dishes....

Tastewise, they were all pretty good - the chicken was fairly tender and tasty, while the ladies fingers and shitake were fresh and fragrant.

The most amazing thing (to me) though is their exceptionally reasonable pricing - all of the grilled items are only either RM 2 or RM 3 per stick.

As for the mains, we tried the House Special Udon - hot (RM 6):
(Note: This udon can be served cold as well)

You can also stir in some of the fragrant chili oil (served in a little canister on the side) and then it ends up looking (and tasting) a bit like chili pan mee instead:

Overall, this is a simple dish that depends on the quality of the noodles... and thankfully, Marufuku managed to pull it off - thick yet not starchy, and with the right amount of "bounce" vs moistness....
(Warning though: If you are a meat lover, like Gary who ordered this, you will not be satisfied as there will be nothing to satisfy your carnivorous cravings. Of course, this is easily fixed by ordering some chicken yakitori...)

I'm much more of a soup person though, so I perferred the Niku Soup Udon (RM 10):

The slices of beef could have been just a tad more tender, but otherwise, I enjoyed the hearty soup matched with the thick udon noodles that had the perfect level of bite. :)

Between the 2 soupy dishes we tried that night, my favourite was the Nabeyaki Udon (RM 10):

The soup was slightly thick and oh so hearty, complementing the udon well - great stuff on a cold, rainy day. There was also a good amount of deep fried goodies like tempura prawn, a dumpling and some tofu, making it a filling meal despite it being a fairly small serving.

To be completely fair, the serving sizes there are generally pretty small. I kinda like that though, because I can have a smaller noodle serving for a cheaper price and have just add on some side dishes if I feel like it,... as opposed to having a massive serving which costs more and I feel too stuffed later/ end up wasting it because cannot finish.
:)

So, it's: Small, cosy eatery serving a variety of freshly made udon and some side dishes for a very reasonable price, friendly service BUT nothing bad really, its just that if you don't like Udon then you won't find much to eat here (Beer + Yakitori is a good combo tho)...

Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part 1

A saga is coming to an end....

I actually quite like the Harry Potter series, having started reading the books all those years ago... and I thought most of the movies were quite good too.
(Goblet Of Fire was my fave, both the book and the movie)

- One of the movie posters:

... but how ah?
*sigh*

I was really looking forward to Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, but in the end I walked away feeling disappointed.
(Hmmm. Will I be flamed by HP die hard fans after this, I wonder?)

- A quieter moment for the 3 heroic friends:
Study group?...


Ok. It's not like the movie (which is actually the half of the 7th and last book) is COMPLETELY HORRIBLE....

Good points:
- It's dark and raw without being completely overwhelming,
- There are some twists and "real" elements like betrayal and guilt,
- You can see how much the characters have grown, both in the literal (physical) sense and also in terms of their outlook and behaviour.

- He Who Must Not Be Named (HWMNBN) aka Tom Marvolo Riddle aka Lord Voldemort:
So many names, for one who must not be named *lol*...

Bad Points:
- OMG. Out of 3 hours, almost 1 hour is draggy filler fluff.
(I am referring to pretty much ALL the time they spent in That Bloody Tent and some other scenes where they wander around, whining)
- Completely overlooked and under utilised supporting characters,
(What? They needed more screen time for Harry, Ron and Hermione to hang around That Bloody Tent so they couldn't afford to have more time for other much loved characters like Hagrid?)
- Some parts were just darn corny and the slight (sort of) nude scene was just completely gratuitous.
(Fan service, maybe? Oh well...)

- That Bloody Tent:
THE Tent of tedious BOREDOM...


So?:
Don't let me stop you from watching it, just don't expect it to be super awesome like I did and you will be fine.

Western & Pasta @ Restoran Yu Yiee, Damansara Jaya

Short post on another good option for coffeeshop Western food :)....

My friends who live in Damansara Jaya have long told me about their favourite neighbourhood coffeeshop Western food stall, but for one reason or another I never got around to trying it out till last week.
(Located in Restoren Yu Yiee, a fairly unassuming corner shop lot just behind the Kolej Damansara Utama aka. KDU):

Of course being a coffeeshop, the setting inside is basic:
(Note: The ventilation inside there is not great - It is likely you will leave smelling like food)

That night I tried the highly recommended Lamb chops with pasta and chips (RM 10):
(You can have the lamb with just the olio pasta or just the fries but Sooj suggested that I try the "half and half" option)
My dinner...

So, was it the best lamb chop and spaghetti I have ever eaten in my whole life?

Well, no.... :P
... but here's the thing: RM 10 nett for 3 pretty big pieces of (fairly) tender and tasty lamb chops, with crispy shoe string fries as well as some fragrant, al dente aglio olio pasta on the side?

AWESOME. :)
(I was surprised how much I liked the pasta - it was slightly dry but deliciously garlicky and accentuated by the generous sprinkling of herbs)

There are also some other really affordable choices at this stall (Ham & Cheese Toast for RM 2.80, Spaghetti Bolognese for RM 6.50, etc) as well as 3 other stalls for you to choose from (one serving fried chicken, one serves fried rice and noodles and some other Chinese dishes (mini tai chow), and another serving bak kut teh).

So, it's: Simple coffeeshop setting, quite limited selection but decent tasting Western food at decent prices, convenient location for PJ folk BUT ventilation is bad there, so you may leave smelling like food... and nothing else bad, just please don't expect it to be as nice as a proper restaurant - it's cheap! :)...

Peko Peko @ Wells Street, Melbourne

Melbourne 2010 Post #7: What? Cute little Taiwanese restaurant that serves pannacotta?...

C: "You're the one in the black jacket and jeans at the Domain Interchange (tram station)? I think I see you from my office..." *Cheng squints*
J: "Yup. You're in the round-ish building, right? See you in a minute.." *J strides confidently ahead*
C: "WaitWaitWait. You're going the wrong way! It's on your right."
*J turns right*
C:"A bit more... "
*turn turn turn*
C: "Ah ok ok stop! Now keep walking straight. Cross the road - will meet you there."

LOL.
(I guess my sense of direction sucks?)

Anyway,.... it was my second last day in Melbourne and it was very kind of Cheng to spare some time during his lunch break to try out a fairly popular Taiwanese restaurant called Peko Peko (which is very near his office):

Yes, I realise it's Asian food (again)... :)
... but the pannacotta here came highly recommended by Mr Alex Lobov (who had very kindly taken the time to give me an extensive list of "Must Eat" places in Melbourne), so I just had to try it.

It is simple and cosy inside Peko Peko with its dark but whimsical paintings on the wall:
(Important note: Do not be fooled by the following photo, as it usually PACKED during peak hours. However, the weekday lunch crowd is mostly from the nearby offices so they cleared out almost immediately at 1.30pm)

They have a pretty extensive menu of Taiwanese food and some fusion desserts, but the popular choice are the bento sets (box sets) so we tried those that day.

First up, the Honey beef bento (about AUD $12):

The beef slices were definitely very fragrant and crispy.... but sadly I found them way too sweet for my tastebuds, unless I paired each bite with huge mouthfuls of the rice....

Other than that, we had the Crispy pork bento (about AUD $12):

Mmmmm.
Again, the slices of meat were definitely very crispy.... but this time it was a tad too salty (although there was a nice fragrance of spices) and not meat-y enough.

By this time, I was fairly disappointed.... but I thought I should try the Earl Grey Pannacotta (about AUD $7) anyway:

Oh man......
Thank goodness I didn't decide to just skip it! :D

The texture was just nice, kinda wobbly like a jelly but still with a creamy enough texture... and a wonderfully delicate flavour of Earl Grey** accentuated by the added vanilla beans.
(**Slightly sweet, fragrant yet with a sliiiiiiight bitter tea flavour - awesome!)
(Note: It is usually served with a much raved about black sesame ice cream, but they had ran out that day and replaced it with a pretty good green tea ice cream)

The dessert really saved the day for me. :) :) :)
To be fair, I don't think the food at Peko Peko was bad.... It's probably just that my expectations are way too high when it comes to Asian food.

(And thanks so much for offering the chocolate fountain to me. It's just a pity I couldn't find any way to fit it into my luggage...)


PS/ After you have gorged yourself on the food there, you can amble over to the Shrine of Remembrance and Melbourne Royal Botanical Garderns, which are both just a stone's throw away.

So, it's: Friendly service, cosy ambience, wide range of Taiwanese food and AWESOME desserts for reasonable prices BUT very crowded during peak hours and dammit the bloody AUD to MYR forex hurts....

Tanzini @ G Tower, KL

Farm to table dining at Tanzini...

This dinner was part of my recent weekend stay with G Tower, so as such, it counts as an invited review. Please find my usual disclaimers as follows :)
1) I have not been paid to write this, but neither have I paid a cent for my meal,
2) I will still be as objective as possible re. the food/ restaurant, and
3) If I go back to the restaurant incognito and find that the food/service is horribly different from this experience, I will amend my ratings here...

Tanzini is very newly opened (just a few months old, if I'm not wrong) and is nestled on the top floor of the also pretty new G Tower KL:

They specialise in modern yet rustic Italian cuisine and as you can see, while the main area (pic above) has a cosy, intimate ambience suitable for dinner with family and friends,... there are also little corners in the dining area that are perfect for a romantic dinner:

I loved the (complimentary) bread basket - filled with freshly made buns and rolls that tasted good when spread with a dollop of the yummy butter, dipped with their special sauces or just eaten plain:

I almost couldn't stop eating the bread, but luckily, our appetizer the Tanzini antipasti tower (RM 50++) arrived soon after:

It is basically an array of ever changing, freshly made morsels, which I was told is concocted according to whatever ingredients they can get freshest, at the time... Overall the little bites were simple but most importantly, yummy combinations - For example this smoked salmon wrap:

One of their claims to fame is their incredibly fresh fish, taken from their farm and kept live until an order is made ("Farm to table dining", as they have coined).

That night, we tried the Pan Roasted Barramundi (RM 38++):
Tasty fish....

The fish was simple yet delicious - delicately flavoured and grilled to perfection, leaving it's supple flesh ever so moist.

Notably, the array of accompanying grilled vegetables were not just a forgettable side that had been thrown onto the plate (which is the case in quite a lot of restaurants nowadays) - I especially loved the grilled asparagus that was succulent and also perfectly grilled leaving it with a lovely smokey fragrance.

Of course, being an Italian restaurant, they have to be able to whip up some good pastas. First up for the night, the Spaghetti Lamb Bolognese (RM 32++)
Tasted like home cooking, in a good way....

Rustic, chunky yet tender pieces of lamb, stewed with a red wine sauce until it reduced to a ever so slightly thick and savoury sauce (almost stew like consistency) - YUM.
(Add a dash of cheese to make it even more yummy)

Comparing the 2, the Tanzini Tiger Prawn Vongole (RM 38++) was more delicate but delicious nonetheless:

Succulent, juicy prawn atop a bed of al dente pasta, coated in a light broth that was fragrant of clams and garlic... and the added tau meuw (bean shoots?) added a nice, crunchy Asian twist to this. :)

Evidently all of us (mostly food) bloggers are greedy and have pretty dire sweet tooth syndrome... because somehow we found space for LOTS of dessert! lol...

- Tiramisu a pezzi (RM 26++):
*drool*....

I loved this - the sponge fingers were moist without being soggy, the cream was rich without being too sweet and it had just enough chocolate + coffee + alcohol in it. :)
(Looking at the price though, I'm a bit sad because I want to eat it again really badly, but it's kinda expensive)

- Pavlova Slow Baked Meringue (RM 16++)
Stacked dessert....

The meringue, chocolate sauce and berries made a nice mix of flavours and textures - Sweet against sour, and crunchy against moist. :)
(Still, personally I prefer the tiramisu)

- Chocolate cake (RM 20++)
The chocolate cake....

Unusually paired with a slightly tart beetroot ice cream (which tasted nice actually!... despite how strange it sounds), the cake was held back from perfection by its dense and ever so slightly dry texture.

- Lavender ice cream (RM 12++/ scoop)
Delicate lavender....

Unfortunately, this is one of those love it or hate it kinda desserts (lavender tends to remind a lot of people of soap and hand wash). The texture is nice and creamy though, so just choose another flavour of ice cream if lavender is not your kinda thing.

- Raspberry sorbet(RM 8++/ scoop)
A more "normal" flavour....

Sweet yet tart - this was a refreshing end to the night. :)

So, it's: Beautiful, romantic setting with a view of KLCC, good selection of Italian favourites as well as some with dishes with a fusion twist, super fresh fish!, very decently priced (considering its in a hotel) BUT nothing bad to say really, just wish that the tiramisu is cheaper so that I can order more of it! (yummy)...

Marutama Ramen @ Farenheit 88, KL

Piping hot ramen at Farenheit 88, KL...

Heard from my friend Gary (HARLOW! *waves*) about this ramen place in the newly opened Farenheit 88 (previously known as KL Plaza) so went to check it out... :)
(This was after fighting through the hordes at the also very new Uniqlo KL outlet, so I REALLY needed some yummy food to recharge myself)

Marutama Ramen is kinda hidden though - located at a corner of the first floor:

It's a fairly small restaurant with simple decor but, overall, it feels comfortable:

As for the menu there: It's very limited, with only 4 types of ramen, 1 rice dish and a handful of side dishes (like gyoza, etc)....
(Still I suppose it's a good thing - means they are concentrating on what they do well?)

Reading the descriptions of the ramens though, I was a bit disappointed:
"Chicken soup ramen with pork slices? What a strange combination... ", I thought.
(Note: Not their fault. I like pork too much, especially porky to the max ramen soups)

Still, post-slurp, I found that I liked the Marutama Ramen (RM 18) - its noodles were springy enough and its savoury soup was hearty without being too thick/heavy:

We also tried the Aka Ramen (RM 22):

Although I didn't find it at all spicy (as they described), I loved how the "secret blend of 7(?) types of nuts" added complexity to the soup - heartwarmingly savoury yet a bit sweet and sour (in a good way) with a slightly nutty aftertaste.

The meatballs were also nice - chunky texture yet still tender, and most importantly, tasted freshly made.
(To be fair though, the price seems a bit expensive considering that the serving size is not very big....)

If you like, you can also add in a sprinkle or two of the addictively crispy deep fried garlic slices that they have on every table:
(My mum LOVED this. She almost finished the whole jar by herself. Lol)

A pretty essential side order here is the Egg (RM 2):
Cholesterol is delicious....

Whilst it was just a tad too salty (on the outside), I loved the perfect texture - firm white and divinely runny yolk inside.

Overall, both my mum and I really enjoyed our meal there, and can't wait to go back to try the other 2 types or ramen.
(Really curious what they taste like)

So, it's: Simple but comfortable ambience, yummy ramen, friendly service BUT nothing bad actually - the menu is limited but (so far) everything tastes nice.....

Fish Farm Thai Restaurant @ Hulu Langat, KL

Rustic but charming setting for affordable Thai food.... :)

Lookout Point in Ampang is fairly well known as a place where (mainly) tourists and romancing couples go more for the view than the food... but little did I know that there is a pretty famous Thai restaurant just down the road (or in this case, hill) from there, called Fish Farm Thai restaurant.

If you live in Ampang, then this restaurant is not that far away... but otherwise, it can be a bit difficult to get to as:
- the roads into the general Ampang area can be jammed,
- the turning into the restaurant area is easy to miss (there's a small neon sign but it's kinda small so you'll miss it if you are driving fast), and
- it's pretty dark when driving in (after you turn off the main road):
(Seriously, the "road" into the restaurant is steep, bumpy, dark and narrow - certain cars like Proton Kancils will have a LOT of problems getting there)
So dark!....

Still, upon arrival (after parking in an equally dark open air parking lot!), I appreciated that this rustic restaurant by the lake was pretty charming in it's own way:

You can even watch the many "chefs", busy grilling the seafood at the front of the restaurant:

Still, overall it can be a bit uncomfortable as it is very packed and noisy, with tables placed ridiculously close together.
(A toddler at the next table flipped his baby chair's "table top" and it missed hitting my head by about 1 inch!)

As for the food, there is a wide range of mostly Thai food (they specialise in grilled seafood) and a few desserts.
(No pork!)

We ate a LOT that night (as there was a big group of us) so I'll keep it simple and divide what we tried into 2 groupings - "Nice" and "Ok lah".

NICE:
- Tom yam seafood soup (white) (RM 14)
Spicy and sour....

We chose the clear tom yam instead of the red one. Nice! - Sour, spicy and nice fragrance of herbs but the serving was kinda small.
(Also, strangely, one of our 2 soup servings was VERY sour... *lol*)

- Bamboo shoots fried with prawns (RM 12) and Fried Paku with belacan, big (RM 15)

Both vegetable dishes were pretty good - fresh and "crunchy"... :)

- Pandan chicken (RM 2.50 per piece)

The chunky pieces of chicken were fragrant and tender. :D

- Sotong with Spicy Coconut Milk Sauce (RM 22)
Crispy squid....

The squid was fresh and bouncey, coated with a crispy batter and topped with a tasty, rich and slightly spicy curry sauce. Yum.....

- Thai Style Lime Steamed Fish (RM 36)
Fresh fish....

The fish was fresh and was really appetising - prepared with the spicy, sour and slightly sweet clear sauce.

- Salt BBQ Fish (RM 36)
Salty fish....

This took AGES to arrive at our table and disappeared in an instant when it did. :)
It's sad that the crispy skin cannot be eaten (it's coated with a thick layer of salt) but the flesh was tender and juicy - tasted good on its own or when dipped with the chili sauce.

- BBQ Lamb, big (RM 20)
Baaaaaaa....

Another one of the popular dishes at the restaurant and I can see why - smokey, fragrant and adequately tender. :D

UM. OK LAH:
- BBQ Japanese Snails, big (RM 22)
Snailssssss....

OMG - yuck.
These were kinda tasteless (except for a bad "snail-y" aftertaste) and kinda chewy because they were overcooked.
(I think they were having a bad night? - there are good reviews of this online on other blog posts...)

- Seafood Fried Rice, small (RM 6)
Fried rice....

Normal.

- Kram Krim Krob (RM 5 per bowl)
Red rubies - classic Thai dessert....

OK lah.
... Didn't like how chunky the ice was, and it tasted more like bubur cha cha because they added in strips of sweet potato instead of jack fruit.

- Mango Sticky Rice (RM 8)
Another classic Thai dessert....

Not nice.
(Mango was sour. Rice was undercooked and not flavourful. Coconut sauce was watery and tasteless)

While I enjoyed the night out, eating and catching up with my friends, I'm not sure if I would want to make the journey out again unless someone else was driving - it's not that the food is not nice, but it's just so far from my house....

Overall: Cute, quaint ambience (like a village on the water), wide range of Thai food fod a reasonable price BUT some hits and misses on the menu, driving there can be a challenge and service is (friendly but) erratic because there are just too many patrons....
