The Classics Come Alive @ KLPAC

What a night! - Great music, fun facts, meeting new friends and shaking hands with an idol/crush while his wife is standing next to him *LOL*....

Isn't the internet a strange and wonderful thing?

If someone had told me years ago that:
1) I would start a blog on food & (sort of) my life,
2) At some time, I would post up a fangirl type entry or two (*blush*) on a certain MPO violinist that me & my friends thought was cute,
3) My (then) crush's WIFE would much later contact me through my blog, inviting me to go to their music recital, AND
4) She does NOT murder me for perving at her husband at that time (I didn't know!) and is in fact the loveliest, friendliest person you could ever hope to meet...
... I would not have believed them. :)
*lol*

Anyway, what a night! - It was a lovely intimate & informal set up at the KLPAC, unlike what you would usually expect from a classical music recital.... and Susana had plenty of interesting facts/ anecdotes about each composer/ music piece:
Fun facts about classical music and composers...

And of course, the music was beautiful! - wonderfully played by Sebastian on his 300 y.o. violin!, and Alfredo Oyaguez on the grand piano, assisted by his adorable son:
Captivating...

I have to say though, I was a bit shy/ afraid to approach them after the show, not knowing what to expect (since we had only been conversing on and off through my blog/ Facebook).... but my fears were completely unfounded as Susana is one of the warmest people anyone can ever hope to meet:
:) :) :)...

(She didn't murder me! Haha....)

So, to Susana & Sebastian:
Not only was it a fantastic performance, but it was really nice to finally meet you both in person.... Looking forward to when you are in Malaysia again! :)

(If anyone wants to be in the loop on where and when their next performance will be, please feel free to join their Facebook Page)

Hugs,
J

Char Kuey Teow @ Say Huat, Section 17

A good place for Char Kuey Teow in Section 17 - available from morning till night...

Possibly one of the biggest (food related) debates in Malaysia would be: Where to get the best Char Kuey Teow?? :)

Usually, there will be insistence that the best CKT can only be found in Penang (O' Haven of Yummy Food), but what are we Selangor people to do? We need convenient options that are not a couple of 100 kilometers away! :)

With that in mind, presenting CKT @ Say Huat (near the Section 17 market):
Looking at Say Huat from the car park area...

Being a normal coffeeshop, don't expect any bells and whistles - just a simple interior, with the typical coffeeshop plastic chairs and tables (with a couple of beer posters on the wall for good measure):
A look into Say Huat....

The CKT (RM4 for small size, RM4.50 for large size):
My CKT! :)....

Yum.
The noodles were kinda soft (but not too soft) and tasted spicy, fragrant and overall, yummy. There was also a fair amount of plump prawns, taugeh and chinese sausage slices to complement the noodles.
(Really hits the spot when you're craving for carby comfort food)
(Hmmm... you'll have to try it yourself though to see whether you like it... Food "nice-ness" is already so subjective, and even more so when it comes to the much loved CKT! Haha....)

We also tried a Tom Yam soup (RM?), which according to Babe! had moved over to the coffeeshop next door....
(... but since she is a regular customer, they agreed to send it over):
Piping hot Tom yum....

I liked it. :)
It's just a simple tomyam but it's tasty, sour and spicy enough to satiate any cravings.

Thanks for bringing me to this place, Babe! It was nice having lunch with you and TNG that day.
(Hope we can do lunch again soon - have to wait till my work schedule becomes a bit better...)
:)

So, it's: Good char kuey teow, convenient location for PJ folk, available morning till night BUT nothing bad to say :)....

London Photos (Part 3)

Desktop holiday for you... European Edition - London (Part 3)....

If there's one thing there's no shortage of in London, it's things to do. The one thing I was really, really looking forward to though, was enjoying my first real West End musical.
:) :)

Of course, I had to watch one of the classics - Les Misérables:
Now I am no longer a West End virgin. *lol*....

It was actually pretty packed inside that night, despite being a week night AND the show having run for about 24 years (such a long time!):
I sat in the upper tier.....

Ooh, it's starting! :) :)
Les Miserables - a dramatic story of love in the time of revolution.....

I couldn't take any photos while the show was on but I definitely enjoyed the experience - it's a classic story with love, death and lots of singing. :)

I just wish I could have afforded a slightly nicer seat because the (cheap) one I was at was kinda far from the stage so I couldn't really see clearly....

Anyway, I ended up catching another musical while I was there - just couldn't miss the new hit, Wicked:
Wicked!.....

My goodness, it was packed to the brim!:
Wah so many people.....

So cool, there's even a moving dragon on top of the stage!:
Sings, "ROAR"

I actually splurged for nicer (in other words, more expensive *sigh*) tickets for this show and did not regret it one bit - loved the show, LOVED it.
(Interesting storyline - an unusual twist on the Wizard of Oz, great songs, and the lead actress had an amazing voice!)

Oh man, I just wish I had more time (and money!)...
There are so many great musicals in London but I had to limit myself to 2 during my visit there. I just hope I can visit again soon so that I can scratch a few more off my "Want to watch!" list.
:)

Hugs,
J

Rice Cafe @ Lorong Maarof, Bangsar KL

Interesting restaurant specialising in Nasi Lemak and Assam Laksa just off Jalan Maarof.... :)

Before I read about Rice Cafe on AWOL's blog, I never knew this row of shops just off Jalan Maarof even existed! :)
(It's on Lorong Maarof - the road parallel to Jalan Maarof, opposite the Telawi area - just turn in at the traffic lights near the McDonald):
Outside Rice Cafe....

It was nice inside - clean, simple and modern. Thankfully the comfortable environment does not necessarily translate into exorbitant prices, as the range of local and Chinese dishes seemed quite decently priced, for the Bangsar area:
Inside Rice Cafe....

I am a sucker for sour and/ or spicy food, so it was only a matter of time that the news of a good Assam Laksa (RM 10.80) tempted me to venture here:
Assam laksa....

Mmmmm.... I guess it was good comfort food but overall, the assam laksa didn't exactly rock my boat because it was more skewed to sweet+sour rather than savoury+sour. Otherwise, if you prefer the sweeter, thick broth type of assam laksa - you'll love this.

OOh, the Salted Egg Chicken (RM 16.00) was really nice though:
The Salted Egg Chicken....

Albeit being a eencey weencey bit too oily, the crispy yet tender chicken pieces were coated with just enough salted egg and fragrant curry leaves to make this a really tasty dish. :) :)

Other than that, the drinks - Barley Lime (RM 3.50), Honey Lemon (RM 4.50) were also quite nice - not too sweet and tasted freshly made:
Cool drinks....

All in all, it was a pretty good meal - the chicken has gotten me curious enough to want to venture back soon to try out some of the other dishes there.
(Apparently the Nasi Lemak is good there!)

Overall: Low key restaurant, decent pricing, located in some shophouses just off the main Telawi area, friendly service BUT nothing much bad to say except that it can be a bit tough to find parking in the area during peak hours.

Sunshine Chicken Farm @ Kuala Lipis, Pahang

Road trip! Yay! (Rombongan Makan-makan sambil Belajar)....

Thanks to a kind invitation from Gerald and Mr Ong of the Sunshine Chicken Farm, and the great organising of our Babe In the City - KL and Cumi and Ciki, a big group of us foodies and bloggers got to visit the very special Sunshine Chicken Farm in Kuala Lipis - where they raise organic free range chickens as well as the capons (aka. yim kai or castrated/ eunuch chickens!).

Will explain more about the chickens later, first up: Some photos from our fun day out :)

1) We had very early start! =_= (Thanks for driving, Josen)
Watching the sunrise on a Saturday morning.....

2) It was a rainy day, but spirits were high:
"Singing in the rain...just singing in the raiiiiin".....

3) At Kuala Lipis, we had a 4WD adventure through the forest:
Vroom vroom.....

4) Arriving at the farm (Ah! Fresh air... Well, if you ignore the smell of the chickens that is.... Haha...):
Rolling hills and misty air.....

5) A special breakfast from Chef Marinus:
Gwailo breakfast.....

(Mmmmmm.... he brought us a simple but yummy selection of some crusty baguettes and his special terrines and pates - which he mentioned is available for sale in O Gourmet, BSC)

6) Carefully walking down to the coops (It was a slippery slope - very muddy):
Squishy, slippery slope!.....

7) A chicken! (Haha... This city girl is quite jakun)
Chook!.....

8) Inside the chicken coop:
Where the chickens sleep.....

9) Hello Sifu:
Castration Kung Fu Master.....

Another dying art - the master here has been passed the knowledge and performing this seemingly painless (the chickens seemed so relaxed!) precision procedure since he was 15, but his children are not carrying on his legacy.....
(4 generations of skill coming to an end?)

10) In the end (poor chook!):
In the end.....

The chickens at the Sunshine farm are (relatively) very lucky as compared to their mass farmed brethren:
- They get the best, organic feed,
- lots of space to run around, and
- (despite what looks to be a slightly scary surgery) a much longer lifespan.

There are actually 2 breeds of chicken at the farm Ma-lai Kai (Kampung Chicken) and the Fah-loh Kai (Color Chicken?) and they are raised in 1 of 2 ways:
1) Free Range Chicken (Ma Cho Kai) - fed only organic feed and given ample room to run around, they have both hens and roosters available, with roosters being slightly more heavier (generally between 1.3kg to 3.0kg).

2) Free Range Castrated Rooster or Capon Rooster (Yim Kai) - also raised on organic feed and given plenty of room to run around, they are given the "snip-snip" when they more or less fully matured, enabling them to grow even larger (quite massive actually - between 3.5kg to 6.5kg!) while maintaining a good texture. It is however, only available in limited numbers as it takes more then 20 weeks to mature...

Anyway, also, according to Gerald you can now buy these special free range and capon chickens at O Gourmet in Bangsar Shopping Complex and at The Meat Experts (TME) in Hartamas Shopping Centre.

You can get more info at their website, or alternatively call them at 03-9102 3950 or 016-662 0105.
(I know Thanksgiving/ Christmas is over, but Chinese New Year really isn't THAT far off so it may be good to make a booking now to avoid disappointment...)

New Year Musings

Time to put on my thinking cap........ :)

2009 is now over, and I got to thinking (as I usually do at this time) - What did I accomplish in the year? And most importantly, how did I score with my all time top (recycled) resolution?:
1) Just lose 5 pounds as a start,
FINALLY. A resolution where I can say I have clearly over-exceeded (although come on - let's be honest: 5 pounds is not really THAT much lah).

Result: I have only lost around 5 pounds, but this small sum is definitely because of muscle mass gain since I have dropped a full dress size. :) :)
(Yay! Excess inches AWAY!)

Anyway, it's definitely been an interesting year - learnt many new things:
1) Whiskey and bubbly do NOT mix.
(CY, Ciki, Nigel, Allan, Jun, Alan&CS... You know what I'm talking about.. Haha)

2) Be careful what you wish for.

3) Men are crazy.
(2009 was, collectively between my friends and I, the year of "The Vanishing Act", "The Tardy Denial Guy", "The Tornado", "I Man, You Woman Guy", "Mr Mememewhatshisfacewhocontinuallyastounds", and many more memorable characters...)

4) I guess women are crazy too.
(To be fair....)

5) I love my life, family & friends. :)
(Even though some parts/ some ppl are irritating some times - no one's perfect!... )

6) It's possible to enjoy food AND lose weight at the same time.
(You just have to work out enough...)

In any case, let's see what this new year brings - One thing's for sure: I'm looking forward to another year of ups (and the unavoidable downs) with my beloved family, friends and foodies.
:)
Happy Gwailo New Year 2010, everyone!

Hugs,
J

PS/ So how are your own 2009 assessments coming along? :)

It's amazing how quickly time flies, don't you think so?

Thank you, sky! - For the amazing and ever changing art you present everyday...

Anyway, I hope you had a Merry Christmas,...
... and will have a very Happy and Blessed New Year!

Nong & Jimmy Thai BBQ @ Ampang, KL

Moving a little further out from my comfort zone to check out some Thai BBQ seafood in Ampang...

Nobody should ask me for directions because I have no idea how to get to this fairly established (10 years and still going strong) eatery in the Ampang area.... I know it's terrible but I'm horrible at driving out/ directions to unfamiliar places such as this.
(I'm such a girl sometimes *guilty grin*)
(Better luck if you check out with Google Maps or your GPS, the full address is listed at the end of the post):
Outside Nong & Jimmy.....

Anyway, it's very simple inside the restaurant, rustic and simple - basically, like a gigantic metal shed with plastic tables and chairs (and equally rustic service - *lol*):
Not fine dining but fairly comfy on a cool night....

As it was a rainy day, we started off with the Tom Yam Seafood Soup (around RM12?):
The steaming claypot of tom yam soup....

Here's a closer look at my bowl of tom yam:
Tom yum.....

Overall, it was ok I guess - simple, kinda spicy and quite salty and sour, with a fair amount of seafood inside. Hmmm... it's just that it tasted a too little "instant" - very much like the shortcut tom yam paste out of a bottle that I use at home....
(Haha... Aiyah, it's not fine dining anyway, right? So can't really complain....)

Of course, since N&J specialises in Barbeque, we tried the BBQ Squid (around RM10?):
BBQ Squid - yummy!...

I actually quite liked this - the squid was fairly fresh, had a supple texture, with a nice charred/BBQ taste to it... and it went well with the accompanying sauces (one sweet, the other sour, but both pretty spicy).

Also, we tried the BBQ Crab (around RM 15?).....:
Also, a BBQ crab.....

... and BBQ Prawns (around RM 15?):
And some BBQ prawns....

I still preferred the squid, but the crabs and prawns were both pretty good too.
:)

We also tried another speciality there, the Thai Style Stingray (around RM 15?):
The Stingray, wrapped in foil....

Not bad - the texture of the stingray was a bit too soft (overcooked maybe?) but the sauce was spicy and tasty (albeit a wee bit salty - although to be fair, I'm sure it would taste just fine with rice and I didn't have any that night)....

Lastly, the Kangkong Belacan (around RM 6?):
The salty kangkong belacan....

This was the only outright disappointment that night - the kangkong was limp, overcooked and completely drenched in a salty black coloured sauce.
(Which made it taste, and look, quite unappetising)

GOMENASAI! I don't have the receipt (again....).
Anyway, I guess I wouldn't mind returning to Nong & Jimmy one day if someone could help drive me there (*grin*) but otherwise, I think this was a once in a lifetime trip....

Don't get me wrong though - I think it's definitely worth a try considering the reasonable pricing... I'm just afraid to get completely lost on the way! *blush*
(*lol*)

So it's: Rustic, simple ambience, fairly fresh seafood, decent prices BUT nothing much bad to say - just don't expect it to be a fine dining experience and you'll be fine.... :)

PS/ I suddenly remembered the restaurant lady's shocked face when we ordered all that for just 2 people and actually managed to finish it all off (except the kangkong)! - *LOL* I guess she must have thought "Poor things - they haven't eaten for 3 days ah??"

Disaster of Sorts

A nightmare for most girls :)....

What happens when you go shopping with a friend (who has similar tastes) and then you meet up without telling each other that you're wearing THAT dress?:
FASHION DISASTER!

Seeing double?...

Hahahahaha...

And I was wondering why as that I walked into The Library, my dear friend S had this shocked looked on her face and kept pointing at me instead of the usual smile and friendly wave. :)
(Luckily we both have a great enough sense of humour/ love each other enough to be able to laugh it off immediately and not have a silly catfight or anything like that...)

Anyway, that night was my first time at the new-ish Library bar and restaurant in Cineleisure Damansara... Overall it was ok I guess - didn't try the food but found that there is a monstrous amount of different cocktails served there,... some of which are really funny!:
What an awkward drink to order!...

:)
I actually ordered this drink, (as it came highly recommended by the waiter *LOL*) but well, it just tasted ok - fairly potent but minus points from me because I found the sweet, strong coconut liqueur flavour a bit cloying.
THE drink...

Still, it was a memorable night indeed!

Can't wait till the next time you and Al come down to KL, S!
(Then I can rub shoulders with "celebrities" again! Haha.... You know what I'm referring to.....)
:) :)

J

Char Kuey Teow @ Restoren Seng Lee, Damansara Heights, KL

Short post on CKT - a classic Malaysian dish...

I had heard that Seng Lee on Jalan Batai in the Damasara Heights area is considered one of the "famous" places in KL for good Char Kuey Teow so understandably, my expectations were a little high when I went there:
Inside Seng Lee.....

Sitting in the rustic little coffeeshop, I didn't have to wait too long till the steaming hot plate of CKT (around RM4?) arrived at my table:
A plate of carby sin.....

Unfortunately, it went a bit downhill from there. :(

Although the CKT looked great, the noodle texture was a little too soft for my liking, and prawns were not really that fresh... :( :(

Still, overall I guess it tasted ok.... there was a bit of "wok hei" and the taugeh were really plump and fresh. And erm... that's about it really.
(Aiyo. How lah? This is the first quite bad review I've given for a while now....)
(If you didn't already know, I really don't like giving bad reviews....)

So, it's: OK tasting char kuey teow BUT does not live up to hype....

Shameless Photo Filler Post

*guilty grin* :D....

Don't you sometimes wish you could fly? :).....

Flap your wings,
And fly away,
Rise up to a brand new day.

One with smiles,
And laughter, not tears,
A life of contentment,
Unblemished by fear.

.... by J the Chocoholic

(Corny, I know. *grin* I'm not very good at poetry, but it's fun to try....)

Funny.
This week I can't seem to blog properly - I keep staring at the computer screen at the photos of the food and all that comes up is "........ ".

Yikes. Could I be suffering from blogger's block??

Anyway, I hope you'll forgive me for putting up this random photo and poem, instead of a proper post... (The photo from a trip to Kunming, China from a few years back - Beautiful place!)..

I'll try to post up a food review soon, k?

Bonjuk @ Desa Sri Hartamas, KL

Perfect rainy weather food - Healthy Korean porridge (amongst other dishes) in Sri Hartamas......

[ BEGIN EDIT ]
(Feb 2010)

I'm devastated - Bonjuk is closed.

I guess my (roughly) once a month patronage and recommendations to my friends/ colleagues was not enough to keep it alive.
(J is made of fail *sigh*)
(Or maybe there are really THAT few people who want to pay more than RM12 for a bowl of porridge)

[ END EDIT ]

I don't know why, but I've always enjoyed a good bowl of porridge...
(Some people find it boring/ food only to be eaten when not well)

I also really like Korean food.... so when I heard of this Korean porridge place in Hartamas some time back, I just had to try it, and it quickly became one of my favourite places for some comfort food. :)
(Oops - missed out this photo earlier) Exterior of Bonjuk.....

Situated on the same row as the 5 a Sec laundrette (pretty much right next to the Black Hole/ opposite Nonbei), its simple inside but comfortable. It used to be a little too warm actually (especially after finishing off a big bowl of hot porridge!) but they have improved on the air-conditioning:
Simple setting inside.....

They started off serving pretty much only porridge (about 15 variations?, available in either a Medium or Large size) but have now expanded to include an extensive bibimbap selection as well as some noodles and meat dishes.
(I looked online and it turns out that its actually part of an international franchise!)

A popular choice here is the Beef & Mushroom Porridge - Medium (RM 11.95+):
The popular beef & mushroom porridge.....

Minced beef (sometimes a bit dry, mostly ok), and slices of mushroom lovingly stewed with rice till it comes together into a yummy, chunky yet smooth mix - it's yummy!... and not too salty too (they claim not to use any MSG), although salt addicts like me can just throw in some of the soup or kimchis they serve on the side (free with the porridge) to make it yummier:
Kimchi and beef.....

My usual though is the Kimchi porridge - Medium (RM 12.95+):
My kimchi porridge.....

This porridge comes with pieces of bouncey squid, and has a nice kimchi flavour (not too strong, but definitely evident) permeated thoughout the porridge broth and even in the rice granules. :)

Having had a long week, I ignored the fact that it was mid-day, and decided that it's the right time for a Lemon Sochu (RM 25+):
Alcoholic.....

One word - strong.
(But I felt much more relaxed after that so I guess it worked...Haha....)

PS. GRRRRRRR to the PJ people who are on holiday today! - I want to be on holiday toooooo..... *pout*
(Haha.. Hope you're having a great day!)

So it's: Simple but comfortable setting, good selection of Korean porridges, bibimbap and some noodles and meat dishes, claims of no MSG! (yay!) BUT it can be a bit slow (sometimes) because they cook your porridge by order, not pre-cooked or en masse (which is good actually....) :)
