Update: Il Padrino @ Wisma UOA, KL

No more pork!

Il Padrino has joined the no pork team (apparently since October 2009) - they no longer serve pork/ lard and have changed all the equipment in the kitchen.
(Lisa: Thanks for informing! Appreciate it....)

My original (and now mostly obsolete) review is here if you want to read it. Hopefully I can visit there soon to check out the new menu.

Anyway, TGIF! :)

Opus Bistro @ Jalan Bangkung, KL

A veteren restaurant in Bangsar....

Had to accompany a friend to Jalan Bangkung just to check on something,... but we saw the lunch set at Opus bistro and decided to stick around to try it out. :)
Outside Opus, on Jalan Bangkung....

The Set Lunch is very decently priced, and for RM 26++, you get a choice of a starter, a main and a dessert.
- Starter:
Salad or soup of the day.

- Main:
Choice of:
Pasta (primi) - Linguini funghi carbonara, or Spaghetti pancho
Pizza - Scallop pizza olio
Fish - Pan fried snapper with tartare sauce
Chicken - Breaded pan fried chicken fillet with chili tomato sauce
Beef - Mini sirloin steak

- Dessert:
Fresh fruits platter or cake of the day.

It wasn't packed inside the restaurant, but there were (what I thought was) a surprising amount of people considering this is a pretty quiet part of Bangsar. Still, it was cosy and comfortable, as it always has been all these years:
You can seat al fresco....

... or you can sit inside the main restaurant area....

As we sat there, I reminisced about how often I used to come here with my (now no longer) special someone, long ago... till the waiters pretty much recognized us... but anyway, that's pretty much ancient history, right?
(Sorry, I got distracted...)

First up, the starter - cold chicken salad:
(They were serving pumpkin soup that day and neither of us ordered it because we don't like pumpkin)
Simple and healthy....

It was a quite a small serving (but just nice as a starter lah), with the crunchy fresh greens topped with slices of fairly tender chicken and a simple vinaigrette dressing.

We were both feeling carnivourous that day so we tried the mini sirloin:
Beef!....

Here's a look at the steak up close :)
Beefy cross section....

Overall, again the serving wasn't very big, but just nice for lunch (and also considering the reasonable price!).... and thankfully the steak was pretty tender and the sauce was delicious - peppery without being overpowering.

As for dessert, we decided to go in opposite directions - one healthy....
Fruits....

... and one, not so healthy:
Cake!....

Guess which one is mine? :) :)

Haha... I couldn't resist! I love chocolate...
Unfortunately, the cake (called Death by Chocolate) was only just ok.... with a slight flour-y aftertaste which degraded the overall flavour of the cake. :(

The fruits were yummy though - I know it's simple but they were all fresh and sweet so they were nice. :)

So, it's: Decently priced lunch set at a veteren restaurant in Bangsar, relatively easy to find parking, comfortable ambience BUT nothing really bad to say, except don't expect the servings to be gigantic, ok? The price is so reasonable for the Bangsar area....

Torch Song Massacre @ The Annexe Gallery

Photo heavy post - Musical mayhem at the Annexe Gallery, KL....

"I want your love....
I want your revenge....
You and me could write a bad romance..."

(Bad Romance by Lady Gaga)

Last week, I watched a fabulous concert show at the Annexe Gallery (near Central Market) - Torch Song Massacre (Bad Romance Edition).

Milling about before the show:
Lots of interesting art pieces in the main gallery area...

A flyer:
Torch song massacre! :)...

Wow, look at those legs:
Fwoar...

Our fabulous hostess with the mostest, Shelah:
Shelah strikes a pose...

She was AMAZING - had us all in stitches, laughing our guts out that night. Although her humour was definitely more on the raunchy side, she kept it clean(-ish) enough, with excellent comedic timing and topped with a good portion of crowd heckling. :)

First act - upbeat disco songs by Izlyn Ramli:
Disco fever...

Second act - wonderful acoustic performance by Alex Koh:
Smooth...

Aiyoh. Can die loh.
His voice is low (baritone?) and sooooooo smooth - can melt icebergs.

Next, another amazing performance - nostlagic retro Chinese songs by Yudi:
Lady in pink...

I found her amazing...
Not only would I kill to have curves like hers, but her voice was like a magic time portal - close your eyes and you could imagine yourself being serenaded in a classic lounge in the 60's.

She interacts with an audience member with the help of her trusty frilly pink wrap - va va voom:
Yudi says "rowr"...

The witty Will Quah:
Man with a sense of humour = sexy...

He sings too!
"You know I, even think it's kinda cute the way
You poison my coffee just a little each day..."...

(He sang a really funny but murderous song by Weird Al Yankovich called "You don't love me anymore")

An Adam Lambert wannabe from Singapore:
La la la laaaa...

Dramatic song by Melissa Saila from the P. Ramlee musical:
How could you, P. Ramlee??...

Next up, really funny Chinese songs by Wong Siew Jye:
"Oh, hungry ghooooooostsss..."....

Awesome Aaron Khaled, with his acoustic version of Alanis Morissette:
Simple but soulful...

Shelah decided to help jazz up his performance with some extra lighting :)
You light up my life...

The wonderful Vodka Vulvas - Zalina Lee, Ida Mariana and Maya Abdullah:
3 sexay ladies...

They even had the crowd dancing and singing along with them:
Unbreak my heeeaaaarrrtttt...

The last act - Shelah and that fella from Singapore again:
Wah, so tall!...

One last look at Shelah:
Statuesque in her hot red dress...

Everyone on stage at the end:
YAY! Great performance...

Finally, a photo of me with Shelah:
Aiyoh I feel so short...

I know I've posted this up a little too late for you to go and catch the show this year* (sorry!)... but please look out for it next year! - It was such a fun night out. :)
(Best invested RM35/ 40 for almost 3 hours of entertainment!)
(* It was only running for 3 days, Friday 9 April till Sunday 11 April 2010)
(Hmmm... actually, even if I had posted this earlier, it still doesn't help much because apparently they were almost completely sold out by Friday night)

Some more details here on this year's performance.

PS/
If anyone involved with Torch Song Massacre is reading this (whether you performed/ did the lighting/ designed the flyer/ etc.): Thank you so much for a fantastic performance - I enjoyed every minute!
(The 2 songs per performer format is genius - leaves you wanting more, which is great).

Jung Won Korean BBQ @ Jalan Ampang Hilir, KL

Interesting place for non-Halal Korean BBQ, near Jalan Ampang......

Oops.
I ate at this restaurant quite a while back but forgot to blog about it....
.... and unfortunately, since it's been a while, I cannot remember exactly how everything tastes (my bad!)...

Anyway, I will refrain from making any detailed comments on the food in my review, but my general feel of the place is:
Nice ambience but food is just ok (taste-wise, and price-wise too it's above average but not great)... but it's worth a try if you're in the area.
:)

The general restaurant area (outside):
Interesting open air setting.....

Tables in the open air section:
Nice.....

(There is also a normal seating area inside the restaurant, if you want)

Meat!
Duck Dungshim (RM 35+) and Pork Deji Salbee (RM 30+):
Poor ducky and piggy.....

The waiters will cook for you:
Chef?.....

*ta-dah!*
Finished product:
Ready to be eaten.....

Lots of side dishes (free!):
Take your pick.....

Kimchi Soup (RM 20+) to warm up on that cool night:
Yummy.....

What's a Korean meal without some shoju? - Bek Se Ju (RM 35+):
Our alcohol.....

(Not bad - strong, but a bit bitter because of the added ginseng...)
(So, if there's ginseng added can this be considered a health drink instead of booze? Can, right? *grin*)

So it's: Interesting open air dining section, good selection of Korean bbq stuff (and some others like noodles and rice dishes) for reasonable prices BUT nothing really bad to say except that my overall impression is that the food is just ok (slightly above average, to be specific)...

Simple food @ Old Klang Road

Road side food in Old Klang Road....

Am not going to be very wordy with this post, hope you don't mind... :)
(Just wanted to share this interesting food place that my friends and I chanced upon in the Old Klang Road area)

Simple setting by the roadside (called Jalan Sawi):
Al fresco, Malaysian style!...

The BBQ lamb (RM 8 per piece) and Chicken Wings (RM 2 per piece) from one of the stalls:
Lamb...

Chicken...

The chicken was quite nice - well marinated, tender.... but it was the lamb that really impressed me. :)
(I was surprised how tender and tasty it was. Went great with the mint sauce)

Nyonya fish slices with rice (RM 6) from another stall:
Fishy rice...

Ok only.
Fish slices had a nice texture (slightly crispy outside but still tender inside) but the sauce was too sour and not spicy enough.

Wantan Mee (RM 4) from yet another stall:
Wantan Mee...

Overall, ok but the char siew slices were kinda dry.

One last look:
All the stalls...

There are quite a lot of stalls there actually. If I'm not wrong, here's what the different hawker stalls can cook up:
- Prawn Mee (So cute - the name is Ha Ha Har Mee *lol*)
- Porridge
- Fried Noodles/ Rice/ Simple "sai chow" (small fry?) dishes
- BBQ Lamb and Chicken Wings
- Desserts
- Drinks

So, it's: Reasonably priced hawker stalls in the Old Klang Road area, yummy bbq lamb! :) BUT it's open air + by the roadside (watch out for rain & exhaust fumes) and surrounding area can be jammed.....

Summary Information:
Road side stalls @ Old Klang Road/ Jalan Kuchai Lama area, KL

Opening Hours: Mon - Sat: (approx.) 5.30pm till late
Phone: -
Address: Jalan Sawi, Taman Goodwood, off Jalan Kuchai Lama, 58200 Kuala Lumpur

Solomon Kane

Haha.. What a night!....

Oh Rotten Tomatoes! You have failed me......
How can it be that you have Solomon Kane listed with a rating of > 8 out of 10?

We (Jo, Pat, Ken, SooJ and I) had meant to watch "How to Train Your Dragon 3D" but due to the fail-ness of GSC*, we ended up watching Solomon Kane instead.... and we unanimously disliked it.
(Picture borrowed from here and there)
The movie poster...

I understand that there seems to be a recent trend where movies do better in times of recession (because people want an escape from reality), but that's no reason to be lax in giving film ratings....
:(
(Picture borrowed from here and there)
Gee I wonder who that REALLY is?...

- One dimensional predictable storyline,
(it's never a good thing if I can guess who the "mysterious baddie in the mask" is & the movie ending by about halfway through),
- lack of character development,
(I just didn't get it)
- rather bad acting,
(not terrible but definitely not good either loh)
- and very strange pacing of the movie.
(a general loss of momentum leading to an "aiyoh, when is this movie gonna end?" feeling)

And mind you, it's not because we don't like classic sword vs sorcery style films - most of us like Conan the Barbarian in all its glorious cheesiness....
(Picture borrowed from here and there)
Consolation: Ok lah. He still qualifies as eye candy - very manly! :)...

I'm not saying you shouldn't watch it, just that you should keep your expectations LOW.
:)

Cheers,
J

* The long story, if you're interested:
I pre-purchased the tickets for How to Train Your Dragon 3D about 2 days before the show. When we went to the cinema on the night of the movie, it turned out that the cinema hall was closed.

The best part is that I only found out because I was getting restless from all the waiting and asked the ticket tearing/checking guy at the cinema entrance why the cinema hall was not ready for us yet.

His reply, "Oh, you didn't know ah? We had a fire yesterday so that show cancel... but you can get a refund from over there *points at Gold Class counter*".

*FACE PALM*
How was I supposed to know???

(Ok. To be completely fair, we noticed later that they had posted up announcements on this cinema fire fiasco. BUT they were printed on WHITE A4 sized paper, with medium sized black fonts, and pasted in roughly 2 places - one on some random column in the cinema area, and another at the Gold Class counter... GOOD GOING EINSTEIN!)

La Risata @ Jalan Kasah, Damansara Heights

Classic Italian place in Damansara Heights....

With so many new Italian eateries mushrooming in KL/ PJ, it's easy to forget the good ol' restaurants that have been around for ages like La Risata in the Bukit Damansara area:
(It has been around for YEARS - no small feat in the fickle, dog eat dog F&B world)
(Thanks for the great reminder TNG! Hope we can do dinner again soon...)
Outside La Risata...

It's definitely not lavishly decorated but La Risata has a cosy ambience, and remains a pretty popular choice amongst people (esp. families) living in the area:
Within the red walls of La Risata...

(Warning through: I have actually eaten here a couple of times through the years, but forgot to blog about it - Anyway, sometimes they can mess up orders when there are too many people, etc, but the service was ok that night when I went there with my friend Z, TNG and her darling Unka....)

That night we started off with the Pizza Vegetali (RM 25++):
The vegetable pizza...

The thin (wood fire baked) crust of the pizza was crispy, and quite generously topped with pesto, pine nuts and slices of grilled vegetables - not bad.
(I am too much of a carnivore to truly appreciate this though - haha...)

Next up, the Zuppe di Pesce (Seafood Soup)(RM 30++)
The seafood soup...

Yummy.
Although it was just a teeny weeny bit fishy (really, just a small bit - almost negligible), I really liked this hearty soup filled with all kinds of seafood.
(It may seem a bit expensive, but I think it's fairly priced considering the amoung of seafood that was in it...)

We alo tried the house speciality - Spaghetti ala Risata (RM 31++)
More seafood!...

Simply put, this is baked Seafood Marinara, and boy, they do it well here - robust, tart tomato base (yay! Not sweet) with a fairly generous mix of seafood matched well with the surprisingly al dente pasta.

I was still endeavoring in my effort to eat more fish so I had the Pan fried Mullet in Tomato Sauce (RM 36++):
Fish with Tomato Sauce...

(Mullet fish, not the red neck Mullet hairstyle... Haha...)

Overall, not bad.
The pan fried fish had a slight crust and was fairly tender but just slightly overcooked. Again, the tomato based sauce was nice - making this dish an enjoyable meal.

Ah, calorific desserts! Once shared, I supposed the sin is shared too, right? :)

The 4 of us shared the Meringue with Raspberries, Red Currant and Fresh Cream (RM 15++) and the Tiramisu (RM 14++):
Meringue (in front) and Tiramisu (in background)...

Both were fairly good:
- the crispy, sweet meringue matched well with the topping of smooth cream and sour berry sauce, and
- the tiramisu was creamy and not too sweet, but unfortunately didn't have any (alcoholic) kick.
(And again, they were decently priced - I still find it amazing that some restaurants can charge >RM20++ for a simple Tiramisu...)

Ah, La Risata, I shall not forget you so easily again! :)
(Have already eyed some pizzas and pastas that I want to try the next round)

So, it's: Wide array of decently priced Italian food in the Bukit Damansara area BUT watch out, if I remember, it can be quite packed on Saturday nights - better to book ahead of time.....
