El Meson @ Telawi, Bangsar, KL

Fairly new Spanish restaurant in the Telawi area with porky dishes.... :)

It was a rainy day but luckily we managed to park just in front of the restaurant:
Sings, "Raindrops keep falling on my head..."

We didn't sit inside, but it looks cosy, with lots of wooden surfaces and Spanish touches (eg. Spanish posters):
A peek into El Meson....

We started off with the Albondigas - Pork & beef meatballs (RM 12++), and Pinchos Ternera - Beef skewers (RM 19++):
Meatballs in front, beef skewers at the back....

Both were quite good:
- the meatballs were chunky and tasty, paired well with the tomato based sauce.
- the beef skewers were tender and fairly well marinated.
(Would definitely order the meatballs again)

SooJ ordered the Iberico Pressa - Iberico pork ribs (RM 62++), which is one of the specialities here:
The pork....

Not that it tasted bad (actually, it was tasty and tender, albeit being artery cloggingly rich)... but the serving was a bit small.
(Can't be helped I guess - Iberico is a very expensive type of pork)

I was trying to be healthy that night so I tried the Confit Cod (RM 46++):
The fish....

*drool*
OMG. It took me by surprise how good it was!
(I really wasn't expecting a place specialising in pork to do fish so well!)

No complaints at all - the cod was tender, tasty (rich and cod-dy without being too cod-dy... Erm, does that make sense to you? Haha...) and was a good serving size for the price.

Lastly we had the Creme Brulee (RM 15++):
Creme brulee....

It wasn't fantastic but not bad too, with the (strangely?) slightly cold cream topped with a thin layer of crispy caramelized sugar.

Can't wait to go back to try out the cod again as well as more of the tapas (they have a good selection of cold and hot tapas).
:) :) :)

As a wise man once said: "Closer to Cod. And in Cod we trust"!

Overall: Good selection of Spanish tapas and mains, specialises in pork! (Iberico and lots of special hams), friendly service BUT nothing much bad to say except that it can be a bit tough to find parking in the area during peak hours.

Melaka Road Trip (Part 1)

YAY! Road Trip with my dahlings (photo heavy+food review).....

We had been talking about it for long enough.. and FINALLY! we made it out of KL on our Makan-Makan (Eat-eat) & jalan-jalan (walk-walk) Road Trip.
:) :) :)

Us girls decided not to be too ambitious for our first road trip together and headed to Melaka (instead of Penang)... and after a relatively short drive out, we arrived famished in The Historical State.

Of course, the first and most important item on our agenda was to fill our hungry bellies with Melakan specialties,... so we headed over towards the famous Restoran Nyonya Makko in the Melaka Raya area (somewhere off Jalan Parameswara - look at bottom of post for map):
Outside the restaurant...

After a few wrong turns, we were saved by our knight in shining armour Jason T. (who luckily for us happened to be in his home town at the time). With our impromptu tour guide in tow, we found the restaurant with no problem and proceeded to relax in the quaintly "old" ambience of the restaurant:
(Yay! The restaurant is comfortably air conditioned! - it was such a hot day....)
Inside the restaurant...

This restaurant has been around since 1984 (Wah! More than 25 years!), and serves a good variety of Nyonya classics.

We started off with the Chicken Pong Teh (RM 10):
The chicken...

I really liked it.
Some may say it's not exactly spectacular but the chicken was fairly tender, and the sauce was tasty and thick (without being too starchy) - perfect comfort food with rice.
:)
(Ooh, and the potatoes rocked - tender and completely soaked up with the tasty sauce...)

We also had the Sotong Umbra (RM 12):
The sotong...

Sorry.... Not much to comment on this.
*indifferent*
(Good = Sotong was fairly tender, not rubbery. Bad = Um. Nothing very special loh...)

One of the specialties here is the Ikan Goreng Cili (RM 24):
The fried fish...

Overall, it was pretty good.
Unfortunately the fried fish was ever so slightly overcooked, but it went well with the generous coating of spicy and fragrant sambal.
(Spicy but not too spicy...)

The Kangkong Belacan (RM 6) was also pretty good - the veg was fresh and the belacan was evident but not overpowering:
Fibre! :)...

Lastly, we ended the meal with a Cendol (RM 3) and Sago Gula Melaka (RM 3):
The Cendol...

Jason swears that this is the best cendol in Melaka, and yummy! - it is good!
(Good balance - fragrant yet not too sweet, with a decent amount of that green jelly stuff etc inside...)

The sago however, was a completely different story - I usually love this dessert but the one at Makko was almost slimy:
Look! The Sago is sliming around...

(Apparently it could be because they completely overcooked the sago beads and it sort of half melted....)

Hmmph.
And apparently the look on my shocked face was ridiculously funny because my good friend started laughing at me:
LOW JO-LYN LAUGHING AT ME IN THE BACKGROUND! *pout*...

ANYWAY, you can also buy the Sambal (RM 5) here. Got one as a souvenier for my mum... :)
Take home some sambal...

To cap off this post, here are a few out takes from our lunch time in Melaka:
1) Pericure anyone? Only RM10!
:)...

2) Or maybe a free massage?:
No, really??...

We were very amused by this creative yet typo-ridden (free??) massage+pericure shop just a few doors down from Makko.

And so embarassing! - we were standing there laughing and taking photos when a disgruntled looking man walked up and unlocked the door going up to that shop!
*BLUSH+LOL*

3) Turns out that our friend Jason T is quite a CAT MAGNET:
(Which is not quite the words he used on himself but close enough! *lol*)
"Meow!", translated: "Take me home please!"...

Shout out:
Hey Mr J.T.... Thanks so much for being our saviour+tour guide that day. Really appreciate it! :)

So it's: Good selection of classic Baba/ Nyonya dishes, reasonable pricing, cosy "old" ambience BUT nothing really bad to say except there were some hits and misses on the menu... :)

Sayonara Cova

Yet another one bites the dust.....

I loved Cova for its yummy salads, but didn't go there for a couple of months...

Then, the next thing I know, I go to meet some friends for dinner at TGIF Gardens and I suddenly realise: "Hey, isn't this located exactly where Cova used to be??"

Boo hoo. It's gone!!
(Here is my original review... Not that it matters anymore, but just for the record... *sigh*)

Nerofico @ Wisma Perintis, Damansara Heights, KL

Italian restaurant just off Jalan Semantan....

This addition to the Nero(teca/vivo...) family is located on the ground level of Plaza Perintis, just off the busy Jalan Semantan area:
Outside Nerofico...

It's simple from the outside, but the interior is nice - feels modern and airy, with lots of sunlight:
So much natural lighting...

Of course there was the usual serving of free bread with a side of oil and vinegar:
Carbs...

We started off with one of the daily specials - the Spicy Prawn Salad (RM 35++)
Healthy salad...

Overall, it was ok. I liked the fresh prawns matched well with sweet chunks of apple and tart sun dried tomatoes... but I didn't really like the thousand island based dressing they put on it.
(I generally don't like thousand island - too rich)

In an attempt to eat healthier, we avoided the range of pizzas and pastas there and instead, shared the Baked Seabass with Wine sauce (RM 58++). Initially, I was not very impressed with the bunched up foil bundle slapped on a white plate:
The sea bass hiding in the foil...

Still, I ended up liking it - the tart sauce was rich without being overpowering and went well with the moist (albeit ever so slightly overcooked) fish:
Part of my fish...

(FAIL moment ahead *lol*)
After having such a healthy meal, we ended up indulging in a Tiramisu (RM 22++):
Tiramisu...

Overall it was ok, but a bit too sweet and creamy so it didn't score very well in my books...
(Still, it was alright - a classic end to an Italian meal)

Here's a warning though - parking during working hours is EXPENSIVE:
WOW...

Can you imagine?: If you spend just 1 hour and 1 minute parked inside (since it's near impossible to find parking on the roadside) then you have to pay RM 9.10.
(That's a LOT)

This of course makes it a bit of a put off to go for lunch on a normal work day.... but if it's any comfort to you, there's a special lunch time loyalty card program going on at Nerofico where you can earn points towards getting a free meal.
(If I'm not wrong, you get "points" for every dollar you spend there, and when you collect enough points you can trade it in for vouchers/ free food)

So it's: Wide range of Italian food, modern ambience, friendly staff BUT some prices are definitely more on the expensive side....

Siem Reap Photos (Part 4)

Desktop holiday for you: Asian Edition - happy days travelling with friends in beautiful Siem Reap (Part 4)....

Last but definitely not least, in my set of Siem Reap photos: THE Angkor Wat....

We woke up REALLY early one day to get there in time for the sunrise. As usual, there were lots of people (although the tour guide pointed out that this is considered a relatively small crowd):
Mini horde.....

We had lots of fun taking photos of the beautiful backdrop and changing colours:
Oooh.... *snap-snap*.....

The pond was a bit of a mess (quite a lot of algae) but the lilies were pretty:
One of the water lilies in the pond.....

We actually visited another time, during the daytime. Here's one of the guardian lions(?) on the outside:
Meow.....

The main entrance into Angkor Wat, after the walkway over the large moat:
The way in.....

Beautiful carvings of dancers:
The palace dancers.....

Also, quite a lot of statues inside:
Ommmmmm.....

We finally made our way to the inner part of the temple:
The inner sanctum.....

It's kinda mean, but we were gawking+laughing at this crazy girl:
Um. Nice shoes?.....

LOOK AT HER SHOES! *shocked/amazed*:
Fashion victim?.....

On one hand, I question her choice to wear a mini skirt and high heeled shoes to a place filled with uneven stone paths, steep narrow stairways and generally tricky flooring....

... but on the other hand: WOW O_O!... I envy her inhumanly keen sense of balance - she could probably give Catwoman a run for her money...

LOL,
J

Language Lesson

J is a bag full of fail sometimes....

Cantonese saying:
"Lor lei chein" used as a part of "Lei chee-kei lor lei chein"...

(Rough) Translation:
"You yourself taking terrible", which sort of means "Hey, you were asking for it*"

Case in point:
Thinking that I was ok enough to talk to my ex...
(I bumped into him at the gym)
Standing there, brain on auto pilot - trying to do the casual catch up chit chat routine...

... and realising that I was crossing my arms (not good body language!) and my chit chat did not sound casual and friendly (it sounded kinda BRISTLY)...
Random photo!: J in Karen's fluffy bear paw slippers (contextually relevant because J can be quite a cartoon sometimes)...

And even worse, as much as I tried to correct all this, I couldn't **.
=_= <----Fail

Oh, and WORST still, 1 week later, he smses me to wish me Happy CNY and I smsed back "Thanks, you too. :) Btw, who is this?" so he probably thinks that I am a petty human being who purposely deleted his number.
(I didn't! I lost a lot of phone numbers accidentally when I changed to a new phone... I only realised it was his number after staring at it for a really long time later on and then it hit me! - awkward!***)

I LOL AT MYSELF ALL THE TIME,
J

* Generally "it" does not refer to anything pleasant.
** I kept crossing my arms unknowingly, then caught my self doing it and uncrossed my arms X4, within a span of roughly 5 minutes - siao, right? Haha....
*** Which is better? Apologise or ignore? Dunno....

Bye Bye Bonjuk

(Strangely?) I love porridge, despite it being generally perceived as food to be eaten only when you're sick.... And one of my favourite places for porridge was Bonjuk in Sri Hartamas.

Admittedly it is a bit pricey to pay >RM 12 for a bowl of porridge... but still, I never felt "cheated" - the porridge was yummy, had a decent amount of meat/ fish/ etc inside, and had no MSG added (which was a major plus point for me!)....

However, I had a rude shock when I went there with a friend last week though: It's CLOSED. :(
(With no notice of relocation, just an omnious "For Sale/ For Rent" sign stuck on the shutters....)

It you want, you can have a look at my review of Bonjuk here...
(In the meantime, if anyone catches a glimpse of a new Bonjuk branch opening anywhere in the Klang Valley area, please tell me, ok? Thanks....)

Boo hoo hoo,
J

Izakaya Shuraku @ Solaris, Mont Kiara, KL

Porky Japanese place in Solaris....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mini language lesson (Japanese):
IZAKAYA (居酒屋):

A type of Japanese drinking establishment which also serves food to accompany the drinks... food is usually more substantial than that offered in bars or `snack bars`.... popular, casual and relatively cheap places for after-work drinking.
(According to Encyclo.co.uk...)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No need to fly all the way to Japan though! :)

One such place in KL is the fairly new Izakaya Shuraku in Solaris Mont Kiara, located on the 2nd floor just above the Maybank (in the front corner shoplot, facing the main road):
Look out for the Maybank...

The entrance up is pretty low key - blink and you'll miss it:
Through the doorway and 2 flights up (or take the lift)...

As for the restaurant interior, it's fairly small but feels cosy,... with a simple but markedly Japanese decor...
(Would really recommend calling ahead to book a table, especially if you have a larger group)
Cosy interior...

There is a pretty good range of lighter food, as well as a few rice (eg. donburi) and noodle (eg. ramen) dishes....

We started off with the Salmon tataki with goma dressing (RM 35++):
Platter of yumminess...

This was one of the more expensive dishes but oh man, was it worth it!:
- Fresh salmon slices, lightly seared on one side, still pink on the other,
- matched with a fragrant, thick sesame sauce.

Bliss! And feels so guilt free too. :)
(As much as I usually stay away from sashimi/ raw seafood - I'm generally afraid of any potential fishy smell and don't like the texture.... I would definitely order this again!)

Next up, the Pork tonkatsu (RM 15++):
Deep fried pork...

As you can see, my friends are attacking the pork in the background *lol* - it disappeared quickly after being served. :)

Although it could have been just a little bit more tender, it was very good considering how dry and stringy deep fried meat dishes can be at some other places...

Also, it was beautifully crisp and flakey on the outside and went really well with the mix of hot mustard+japanese mayo+sweet sauce served on the side.
:D

Saba shioyaki (RM 15++):
Grilled mackerel...

Unagi kabayaki (RM 22++):
Eel!...

Both are classic offerings at any Japanese restaurant. Here, they were done pretty well:
- Mackerel was fairly tender but just slightly too salty,
- Grilled eel was tender and not too sweet (yay!).

Tori garlic (RM 14++):
The Garlic Chicken...

This came super highly recommended by Pat, and ok - while it was not FANTASTIC, it's pretty darn good:
- Crispy, tender chunks of chicken,
- topped with fragrant and crunchy slices of garlic.

Tori no Nasu No Zibuni (RM 14++):
Chicken Stewed with Eggplant...

Overall, this was pretty nice:
- Wholesome, slightly thick broth with an undertone of wasabi, and
- the chicken and eggplant pieces were wonderfully tender.

Garlic fried rice (RM 7++):
Carbs!...

Strange - Pat warned me that they served this dish very slowly (2 out of 2 times that he had been there) and yup, they took really long that night too.
(Talk about consistency! *lol*)

Still, it was yummy.... It just would have been nice if I received it somewhere around the same time as all the main dishes rather than almost at the end of the meal...

Goma ice cream (RM 8++):
My black sesame ice cream...

Chocolate Baileys ice cream (RM 11++)
Chocolate ice cream with Baileys ...

They don't have much in terms of dessert there, just a selection of ice creams. Overall, both ice creams that we tried that night were nice, but the Chocolate Baileys ice cream really rocked:
- Chocolate ice cream with a dash of Baileys Irish Cream, topped with a sprinkling of crispy cornflakes... YUM. :) :)

Japanese food is quite commonly found in KL/ PJ nowadays.... so whilst this type of cuisine is not as "special" anymore, when it's done well... *drool*... gosh, it really stands out.
(Can't wait till I go back to try more of the food!)

So it's: Good selection of porky Japanese options as well as some classic selections in Solaris Mont Kiara, friendly service and cosy ambience BUT interior can be a little bit cramped, and really nothing else bad to say... :)
