** Mum's The Word **

Yes.

Am finally putting up the review.

'Tis about 2 weeks late.... but well,.. *shrug*.... I've been pretty busy.

Anyway, here goes....
(better late than never, right?)

;)

The Dinner:

This week we went for the much awaited Nyonya dinner at Mum's Place in the Damansara Perdana area.
The food was pretty good.
Clever Sneexe had taken the liberty of ordering a selection of the restaurant's signature dishes in advance for us, so the food was served quickly.

And wow, what a variety of classic Nyonya dishes we had!
We sampled a range of goodies - yummy Chicken Curry Kapitan, pungeant Petai Fish, crispy Deep Fried Soft Shell Crabs, flavorful "Sang Har Mien" and much much more.
(Another dish we tried (for dessert) that I would recommend is the glutinous rice served with home-made kaya - simple yet satisfying...)

Everyone said that the Petai fish was really good.. but I wouldn't know.
(Petai - Eeee......! So smelly!)

:(

I am so not true blue Malaysian.
Just can't bring myself to eat durian or petai....

Anyway, here are some piccies of the night:

Oodles of Noodles

Dessert Ahead - Attack!

Ken Playing With Patrick's *coughcough* IPOD.

The JJ (Registered Trademark)

Overall, twas a good night.
We had some long lost visitors from out of state (JJ and Julian), one of which rudely pointed out that I had gained weight....
*hissss*
(you know who you are, you meanie!)
*sob*
.... and met a few new people like Sneexe's friend who's one of the people behind Friedchillies.com, my favourite Malaysian food review site....
(Pssst, love your site, but please UPDATE more often lah....)
Dinner at the restaurant was a good experience - I really love the decor - it was eclectic, with wood carvings galore and a generous array of potted plants, giving it a cosy yet unpretentious ambience....

The After-(Dinner) Party:

After piggin' out at Mum's Place, we took a relaxing walk to a near-by bar called Stream.
It looked OK for the outside... like a quiet bar with live band.

Unfortunately, what we got were:
  • A limited selection of drinks.... It was a very Hongkie style place, serving bubble teas and beer.
  • A mediocre live band consisting of one very bored looking female singer and an ok male singer playing a guitar/ synthesizer.
  • 2 drunk girls from a table-full of equally drunk people hijacking the stage and doing their rendition of popular Chinese songs (They even took a liking to Pat - glancing flirtatiously in his direction - *baffled* - what is it with Pat and (drunk) female singers??)
  • A fat chinese bloke (from said table of drunk people) wiggling his arse (aka. attempting to dance) (Aiiiiieeeee.... My eyes!!!!)

bUZZbUZZbUZZ

Notice that there have been no updates?

Yup.
I'm ~that~ busy.....

*wail*

It's been a crazy week.....
...been working insane hours, clocking in an average of 14 hours a day.....

I suppose there are some upsides of waking up at unGodly hours to get to work early though.
The drive to my office has been an absolute breeze and the watching the sunrise everyday has been really nice....

Sunrises are amazing....
...a different one every day....
...rich shades of navy blues and purples...
...vivid scapes of yellow and pink...
Ah.... nature's beauty.
*sigh*

(yeah, yeah... I know I am ranting over nonsense, but do let me console myself in some small way lah...)

The Fon-EW House

Top of the morning to you all.

[ BEGIN EDIT ]
(August 2007)

I was passing by this area in Hartamas the other day when I noticed that Fondue House has closed down! As far as I know they haven't opened another outlet anywhere else.....
(Does anyone know?)

Anyway, there are a couple of new restaurants (one Chinese and the other is Italian, I think) that have opened up in almost the same place - shall try it out as soon as I can.

[ END EDIT ]

The Dinner:

The restaurant this week was a real disappointment....
Many of us (myself ~especially~) were looking forward to a simple and delicious fondue dinner but the Fondue House only managed to provide us with:

  • Very very bad service - they missed half our orders, and
  • A mind-numbing (close to) 2 hour wait for our food - with the added pain of seeing tables that came in much later than us get their food (AND finish it) before we were finally served.

Hours later, with our bellies grumbling (and Kwong Heng almost blowing his top - it's NOT a pretty sight, I assure you) we were finally served.... Usually, the rule of thumb is that the hungrier you are, the nicer the food will taste....

Well, you know what? - this place breaks all the rules.

Here's what we got:

  • Salty cheese fondue with a tiny plate of accompanying meats and vegetables, AND
  • Tiny jar of runny chocolate fondue served with a plate of sour strawberries.

The half of the table that got food

The other half that did not get food until 2 hours later

A very hungry Ken - ~scary!~

*sigh*

To their defense though, apparently 2 of their waitresses called in sick that day and they have just opened last month... so hopefully they are just having some problems warming up to the whole F&B business and will improve in the next few months.....

At the end of the night, the owner was really nice and gave us 20% off our bill... but somehow, after waiting almost 2 hours for our food, it felt like too little, too late....

Busy Bee

Wheeeee....
Time is passing mighty fast this week....
I've been really busy so the hours are zipping past at light speed...
Feeling so tired... been travelling non-stop around the whole of KL/ PJ for the last few days...

Luckily there's a nice long weekend to look forward to...
(Yay for public holidays! Hip hip hooray!)

Unfortunately, this public holiday on Friday and the on-coming long Deepavali+Hari Raya break is a bit too bittersweet for my taste:
On one hand - *happy dance* It's a holiday! *happy dance*
On the other hand - So many people will be taking off for long holidays that it will confound my efforts to complete my report..... *bleh*

Will have to cross that bridge when I get to it I suppose....
*sigh*

I must say though: Hooray for Malaysia! All hail thee O' Beautiful Land of Multiculturalism (and the amount of religious public holidays that come hand in hand with that)

And now, a sight for (making) sore eyes:

Round 3 of Cosplay- The Horror Continues

*blinkblink*

No.

I have no blinkin' idea what the f*** he is supposed to be either...

Anyone want to guess?

ps/ This time, I have at put up a pic with at least a little eye candy in it. If you can stand to look at the above pic long enough, do have a glance at the girl in the white lingerie standing behind the man-thing. Not quite Angelina Jolie but... *shrug*... enjoy.

~~ Commercial Break : Upcoming Dinner ~~

Hey y'all....

This will have to be a quickie...
*glances over shoulder to the Mount Doom aka. "The monstrous pile of work"*

*whimper*

Anyway, Monsieur Pincon is organising the weekly dinner (yet again)....
This week we'll be checking out the new Fondue House in Hartamas.....
(~~ They serve chocolate fondue there!! ~~ *droool* ~~ How can anyone say no?)
(*gets all misty eyed*..... MMMmmmmmmmmmm)
...and the after-dinner party will be at the nearby Backyard Pub....

Just briefly:
The dinner will be on Saturday, as usual, starting at 8.30pm.
(do check out the details, piccies and reviews on Pincon's site)
Please RSVP by Friday......
(and try to stick to it too or Patrick will claim your first born as penance!)

Oh, and did I mention that there is chocolate fondue at the restaurant?

Catch you later, ppl...
:)

Signing off,
J

** Star Wars Version: Chinese Whispers **

*yawn*

Top of the morning to y'all....

Nothing too exciting happening on my end...

My Week, so far:

  • Worked,
  • My dad is feeling better .....*yay*,
  • Pondered the meaning of life,
  • Found out that I have to be in Kuantan for the next 2 days... *sigh*.

In any case, here's a funny forwarded email I got from my friend May Yee that I thought I'd share with y'all (This is for all the Star Wars fans out there):

Original post:

I saw revenge of the sith last weekend at a local theater with my friend joe who was in town on business. it was much better than the first two movies and a fitting end (err.. middle) to the star wars saga. The next day I was walking past my friendly dvd salesperson and decided to check out revenge of the sith.

I was assured the quality was good and for 7rmb why not give it a shot. Aside from the counters on the top of the screen and a distorted perspective it was ok- not high quality but watchable. The captions were a hilarious surprise- a direct english translation of the chinese interpretation of what the script was saying. It varied from being somewhat close to the script to being 'far far away'....

....amazingly enough, the beginning scroll is mistranslated even though the words are right there on the screen.

....star war (just one)

....'the backstroke of the west' is the english translation of the chinese title.

....anakin: "this is where the fun begins"

....obi wan: "let them pass between us"

....obi wan, space battle strategist.

....obi wan grows impatient with r2-d2.

.....the chancellor warns anakin and obi wan that count dooku is... big.

....obi wan assures the chancellor that it's no problem.

....count dooku talks tough.

....anakin taunts general grevious.

....the general fires off a snappy comeback.

....yoda: "premonitions? premonitions?"

....anakin: "obi wan, may the force be with you"

....anakin bargains for the life of his .... cuckoldry?

...c3po tells the amorous couple to get a room.

....obi wan can't face what he must do.

....yoda insists...

....anakin tells padme about his new virtues, now being both strong and big.

....obi wan has heard enough

....i love this translation. darth vader is actually shouting, "nooooooooooooo..."
*lol*

The hazards of buying illegal DVDs.....
It's a good laugh though, for a few bucks.....

** Artistique **

Hmmm... yet another upcoming event has caught my eye....

Details:

Venue ~ KLPac - Pentas 1, Jalan Strachan, off Jalan Ipoh, Sentul West, 51100, Kuala Lumpur
Date ~Fri 14 till Sun 30 Oct 2005
Time ~ Tue-Sat: 8.30pm; Sun: 3pm; Mon: NO shows
Tickets ~ RM 120/ RM 80/ RM 60
(50% discount for senior citizens, the disabled and students - not applicable on promotional nights)
(J: Oh,..... and 10% discount for Maxis users)

Synopsis ~
In Ovid's tenth book of his poem Metamorpheses, the lead character Pygmalion was a sculptor who falls in love with a statue he created. Using this basis, George Bernard Show created his play Pygmalion, in which a common flower seller (Eliza) is transformed to pass herself off as upper class, simply by being taught how to speak proper English by Professor Henry Higgins. In the process, he becomes fond of her and falls for the new woman he has 'created'.

Now, the classic tale about language, class, manners and love has been given a Malaysian pinch, twist and squeeze. The tale is set in present-day Malaysia, although certain aspects like the words, lyrics, culture, set and wardrobe remain somewhat British, Edwardian almost. Expect lots of Manglish, malapropisms and hilarious turns of phrase and eleven original songs like 'Don't Talk Like That One' and 'Ai ah adoi, ai oh'!

Join the 14-strong cast and orchestra of 7, in this all-original musical show. Starring Harith Iskander as Professor Higgins, Indi Nadarajah as Colonel Pickering and introducing Michelle Quah as Lisa, the flower girl. Also featuring Fong Muntoh, Suzan Manen, Sarah Shahrum, Renee Aziz, Elaine Pedley, Llewellyn Marsh, Tabitha Kong, Janet Li, Kay-Li, Nicole Ann Thomas and Cristina Yap.

Directed by Paul Loosely with Executive Producer Faridah Merican and Artistic Director Joe Hasham. Presented by Maxis One club and KL Pac.

Well,... not all the short films are in English....

*YuM* Calorific Weekend *YuM*

Amazing turnout for dinner this week at Paddington's House of Pancakes. I think it's our top score to date (18 attendees in all - ranging from uni friends to high school friends to blog buddies to much missed visitors from out of state)

(hmmm... let's try to get them all in one breath:
*breathe in*
TherewasMe,Chai,JJ,Jo,Lenny,Pattar,HueyYee,Lisa,ChenHoe,Sam,
Albert,Z,Melvin....
*gasp*
... and Lenny's blog friends - psssst, so sorry girls, didn't really get your names - my fault...)

The Dinner:

Dinner commenced with much deliberation by all attendees over which type of pancake to order... (There are so many choices - all of which sound so tempting)

Huey Yee and Lisa had a scrumptious breakfast style pancake+scrambled eggs+(beef)bacon which they said was really nice...

Sin on a plate part 1

I finally settled for a yummy pancake+lambchops+mash potatoes combination which turned out great! Mmm.... the lamb was tender and juicy, the mint sauce was delicious and the pancakes... *drool* ....
Mmmm... perfect: crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.....

Sin on a plate part 2

Other pancakes that I would recommend are the American style "burger" pancake and the Mexican style pancake.

The waitress looked a bit grumpy (as usual) but *sigh* that's the way it is when a restaurant becomes too popular and the staff feel overworked.
Oh well.
I suppose it's still ~acceptable~ 'cos it's not a fine dining place.

(Grrr, if the pancakes weren't so d@mn good, I really wouldn't bother going back - I don't like having to pay a 10% service tax for someone to serve me with daggers in their eyes and a permanent scowl attached to their face)

If I had to summarise the whole experience in 2 words though, it would be:
Delicious.
Satisfying.

I love going to Paddington's.
Their pancakes, both the savoury and sweet variety, are something really refreshing in the Malaysian food landscape. It also helps that the pancakes are voluminous in variety and delicious in taste.
(at prices which do not hurt the wallet, to boot!)

What would I recommend at Paddington's?
It would be hard to narrow down to just a few selections!
So far, everything that I have tried has been good so just go crazy and choose whatever.

It's a great place for a lazy weekend brunch or a casual dinner with family and friends.

The After(-Dinner) Party:

We then moved on to Hartamas to check out the new bar that Pattar had been ~dying~ to visit - the Clear Bar, situated at Plaza Mont Kiara (right next to the Starbucks).
It was a cute bar.

It looks tiny from the front, but upon entering it, suddenly reveals that there is actually a rather large back section.
The bar had many comfy couches and a tasteful minimalist decor.... with white and silver and blue being the main colours in their theme.
(Oh, just so you know, you can make bookings for Clear at 03-6201 9223)

I must say though, the selection of drinks there is rather disappointing.
No cocktails whatsoever listed, but an ok selection of beer sorta made up for it.
(Mmmm.. German beer... yum...)

Chatted with Chai on the importance of drinking Chinese herbal soups.
(Good for health and delicious too!)

:)

During the night, Pattar received yet more birthday gifts, from Huey Yee this time...
(a cute Mr. P mug (with Mr. P's ~naughty bits~ on show *tsk-tsk*) and an adorable but strange magnet of a cow/pig cross-species mutant)

Pat with more prezzies in hand

I had an early night... *yawn*.... left at about 1am while everyone else stayed back for further festivities...
(a sign of old age, perhaps)
(shush! *glare* Not a ~word~!)

Everyone chatting at Clear

A Moment of Silence

How fleeting life is.

They say that lightning never strikes the same place twice - more and more I'm finding out that this old adage is not true.

Hurricane Katrina , then Hurricane Rita.

Bali Bombing No. 1 and now, Bali Bombing No. 2.

I watched the footage on the news before going to sleep last night...
It made me feel sick.

Backpackers sitting innocently in a pub in Kuta, having a laugh while drinking cheap Balinese beer....
(That pub that looks scarily familiar... I think I walked past it many times when I visited Bali...)

Tourists and their families eating at Jimbaran beach, enjoying the beautiful sunset and the sounds of the waves crashing on the sands......

A sunset at Jimbaran beach

... and then suddenly, they become the sacrificial lambs to someone else's cause.

*sigh*

Why must this be the way of the world?

Bon Anniversaire Le Grenouille!

*HUGS*

Happy birthday, big guy!
Yups, our Monsieur Pincon is officially older today
(He has safely survived yet another year in one piece, without any grievious incidences... well... pretty much anyway)

Here're some photos of Patrick, the birthday boy, at Albert's bachelor pad, unveiling his present.....

Voila! Le Gift....

Inner Monologue: "Ph34r M3! 1 4M T3H P@TT@R!"

Well, Pat, I hope you like the present...
:)

(It's sorta a graduation/birthday gift, but anyhow...)
It's really nice to see you in something that is NOT a t-shirt, for a change.....
(Good Lord, it's so hard to find stuff that fits a 6' 3" guy, in Malaysia though!)
(...unless you so to woefully overpriced designer stores, of course...)

*evil snicker*
He'll never suspect that I laced the shirt material with arsenic.....
*cackle*

Erm.....
*nervous laugh*
... nobody heard that, right?

Alright, gotta go!
*exit stage right*
